We’ll travel around Mauna Loa, Earth’s largest volcano, and head toward Kīlauea volcano, the star of our show. Along the way, you’ll pass coffee plantations, vast lava fields, pastoral countryside, black-sand beaches, and some truly massive craters. It’s a full day of exploring Kīlauea Volcano, from summit to shore.

GREENWELL COFFEE FARM

Start your morning in the heart of Kona coffee country. Wander between rows of glossy green coffee trees while the air fills with the smell of fresh roast. Sip a cup made right where it grew, the fuel for a long, volcanic day ahead.
Next stop: carbs and malasadas.

PUNALU’U BAKE SHOP

The southernmost bakery in the United States, home of the world’s happiest doughnuts. Pick up a warm malasada and some sweet bread for the road because volcanoes are best explored on a sugar high
Next stop: black sand and sea turtles.

PUNALU’U BLACK SAND BEACH

Step onto one of Hawaii’s most striking beaches, where green sea turtles bask on glistening black sand. The waves here crash against the raw lava shoreline, the perfect preview of what’s to come higher up the island
Next stop: the volcano itself.

HAWAI’I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Welcome to the edge of creation. You’ll stand above steaming vents, ancient lava flows, and the raw scars of Kīlauea’s eruptions. Feel the heat underfoot and the chill of history in the air, this is the island’s beating heart.
Next stop: underground

NĀHUKU LAVA TUBE

Descend into the once-molten arteries of the volcano. As you walk through this cathedral of cooled rock, imagine the lava rivers that carved it centuries ago. Nature’s architecture, built one eruption at a time.
Next stop: waterfalls and mist.

RAINBOW FALLS

By now you’ve earned a break from the lava. Rainbow Falls is nature’s version of a cold shower; lush, loud, and slightly dramatic. Trade the steam and sulfur for mist and rainbows before we head back west.
Next stop: the road home

SADDLE ROAD

By now the island changes gears again. We climb out of the rainforest and rise above the clouds into a stark, high desert landscape between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Cool air, wide horizons, and a quiet stretch of road that reminds you just how big this island really is.

A Journey Ends

By the end of the day, you’ll have stood where the island still builds itself, walked through its molten past, and probably tracked a little of it back into the van. Kīlauea: Summit to Shore, a trip around the youngest, rawest, and most volcanic side of the Big Island of Hawai‘i.

Please note: This is a sample itinerary. Every tour is flexible and may be adjusted based on guest interests, weather, road conditions, and guide discretion.

We love erupting volcanoes as much as you do. However, lava viewing is not guaranteed. Lava visibility depends on current volcanic activity at Kīlauea or Mauna Loa and whether any active lava is safely and publicly viewable at the time of your tour.
